Since the global pandemic started five years ago, the internet became my primary source for shopping. Although I wasn’t much of a shopper anymore before this, anyway. I quit shopping for entertainment once we changed our money mindset. Which is something we had to do if we were going to catch-up our retirement savings!

However, we all still need to buy toilet paper, household essentials, and food. Thanks to the ongoing COVID variants, I continue to do as much of my shopping online as possible. I plan to knock out my list on Cyber Monday and save a ton of money! Keep reading for money saving strategies and deals.

Saving Money During Black Friday Weekend and Cyber Monday Sales

It is more important than ever to save money, especially in these inflationary and unpredictable times. Whether you are trying to catch-up retirement savings, worried about a recession, or you’re anxious about the economic impacts of COVID and the impacts of the latest political breaking news on your finances, these worries cause a lot of stress.

One way to get your needs met while staying safe and trying to grow your cash reserves is to shop online sales, especially during Black Friday weekend and Cyber Monday. Both occur on the weekend following Thanksgiving. Although Black Friday was traditionally the biggest shopping day of the year, it’s not anymore.

In the last few years, online sales during Cyber Monday exceeded those on Black Friday! It turns out that Cyber Monday is the ideal time to shop for tech items and gifts because the deals are often better online. Plus, it’s still a good idea to shop online.

By shopping online, you will save time, save gas, prevent wear and tear on your car, and protect yourself from viruses going around. People say the pandemic is over because so many of us have been vaccinated, but COVID continues to strike. Unfortunately, repeat bouts lead to long-term health problems.

Avoid the crowds and the risk of getting sick by shopping online. Especially when you can save lots of money on Cyber Monday!

The Best Sales are Black Friday – Cyber Monday

The best online sales are often found during Black Friday and all the way through Cyber Monday. It is a great time to stock up on the essentials, get holiday shopping done, and purchase any bigger items or services you may have been saving for.

There is nothing wrong with spending money on Cyber Monday. Penny, from She Picks Up Pennies (linked above) noted that many Black Friday (and Cyber Monday) shoppers may be trying out budgeting for the first time. What a great way to experiment with making money go a little further, especially with the deep discounts available at this time of the year!

Learning about the Financial Independence Retire Early (FIRE) community helped me realize how I could enjoy the things that were important to me, yet still save money. My priority has been saving to catch-up retirement savings. The money I spend now is based on my values.

You Do You – Personal Finance is Personal

Of course, that looks different to everyone. The neat thing about personal finance is that it’s personal. You get to decide what is important to you when it comes to saving and spending your money.

Family Values, or Why We Buy Green

Our family values being out in nature. We enjoy camping, hiking, looking for edible wild mushrooms, and gardening. Preparing (and eating!) healthy food together is one of our favorite activities.

Caring for the environment and supporting small local businesses when we can is very important to us. We value community and friends, and like to do what we can to help others. Keeping it green is a priority.

Pela Compostable Phone Cases

I was super excited to find the eco-friendly, biodegradable Pela phone case. Here’s why – the Pela Case is made from plant-based material instead of plastic, which is so nice. It comes in a variety of colors and designs. The best part is that the Pela Case it is 100% compostable!

I purchased a Pela compostable phone case and I love it! Having a phone case that isn’t made out of plastic was important to me. Cell phones need a protective case (I’ve dropped mine a few times!) so why not opt for a more environmentally friendly version? The Pela compostable phone case makes a great holiday stocking stuffer, too!

Pela has more eco-friendly gifts to help you ditch plastic. In addition to phone cases, Pela offers compostable AirPods cases and smart watch bands. The Pela Vision brand features amazing biodegradable frame sunglasses and blue light glasses.

How often do you experience eye strain? Did you know Pela can also protect your eyes from the damaging blue light emitted from screens? Pela’s blue light glasses are protective and stylish! It feels good to know Pela blue light glasses and sunglasses have frames that are biodegradable, too.

Pela has several BOGO offers and FREE SHIPPING on compostable, eco-friendly products, so be sure to use this link to check their website.

Pela had some great Black Friday deals through Cyber Monday. This is Pela’s biggest sale of the year! The more you buy, the more you save! Shipping is free on most orders, too!

  • Buy one case, get 1 item free.
  • Buy 2 cases, get 3 items free.
  • Buy 3 cases, get 4 items free.

Bookshop is the Place to Order Books on Cyber Monday & Beyond

First of all, be sure to check the specials page at BookShop.org

Secondly, Bookshop.org is a wonderful alternative source for books! Bookshop raises money for independent booksellers. You can support local bookstores and find just about any book you like on Bookshop. Need a quick gift? Bookshop gift cards can be purchased and downloaded immediately!

You can give digital gift cards from Bookshop anytime!

I’ve compiled a list of my favorite personal finance books if you need gift-giving ideas!

If you plan to buy books for yourself or loved ones, consider a purchase that will benefit independent bookstores instead of buying from Amazon. Jeff Bezos does NOT need the money! Not to mention he could afford to provide better pay & benefits to his workers, but he chooses not to. I no longer shop at Whole Foods since it was acquired by Amazon, either.

That doesn’t mean you need to shop in person during a pandemic. Most local bookstores will happily take phone orders for curbside pickup or shipping.

If you prefer armchair surfing, you can search for any book title easily on the Bookshop.org website. Bookshop supports independent book sellers!

See my favorite personal finance book recommendations by clicking here.

I’ve curated a few reading lists on Bookshop, so check out my recommendations for your gift-giving needs! You will find booklists for children, plant lovers & gardeners, and money nerds (maybe someone you know could use some help figuring out how to catch up retirement savings after a late start – there are books for that!).

Rakuten

Still need to shop for other items not on this list? One last resource that will save you a bunch of money is Rakuten! Basically, you get paid to purchase things you were going to buy anyway, when you go through the Rakuten shopping portal first.

They Get Gifts, You Get Paid

You must live in the US or Canada, and a minimum purchase is required within 90 days from sign-up (but you will earn cash back on your purchases through Rakuten).

  1. These all sound like great sales to shop this week! I never heard of compostable phone cases before, but I love that concept! Thanks for sharing all of these brands, I’ll definitely be checking a few out!

  2. A very cool and very different post to the ones I’ve been reading this weekend. Really refreshing. I love the sound of the compostable phone cases, how have I never heard of these before!?

    Rosie

  3. I thought cyber Monday was a UK thing to drag out the black Friday over the weekend as we didn’t really engage with a one day sale here, but I guess that too came from the US.

What are the requirements for the compostable phone case to start breaking down?

    1. According to the Pela website, the compostable Pela phone case will start breaking down in a backyard compost or industrial compost, but not in a landfill. That’s the point, though. Keep stuff out of the landfill and regenerate the soil instead. The website didn’t say how long it would take, but that it would be faster in an industrial compost facility because they grind everything up. Hope that helps, Unwanted Life. Thanks for stopping by!

  4. It’s so lovely to see some companies promoting their green credentials and products at this time of year. And the compostable phone cases sound amazing, who knew that was even possible! Will definitely be checking those out, thank you, Kathy!

  5. You have shared some great deals here! I have looked at the Pela cases in the past, but I always wondered if they would be able to stand up to the abuse of life in our house lol My phones take a bit of a beating, so I’ve stuck with brands that are known for their durability like Otter Box, LifeProof and Spigen.

  6. This was refreshing. There had been so much negativity out there about spending money during cyber weekend this year. I’m glad to see someone say that it’s ok to spend money reasonably. Why else do we bother to earn it? You also listed some pretty interesting green deals! I never thought about compostable phone cases before.

    1. Good point, Mrs. P&P – we earn our money for a reason, let’s use some intention in how we spend it. There’s nothing wrong with spending it! How we spend it reflects our values and casts a vote in support of eco-friendly products and companies.

  7. Love it! These are some amazing deals, thank you for sharing! I’m so pleased to see someone saying it’s okay to spend a bit of money, otherwise why would we bother to earn anything? I’ve seen a few people being negative about this cyber weekend, but this post was certainly refreshing. Amazing!

  8. Thank you for this article! I feel it’s important to treat yourself with something you really want but taking into consideration the implication that little thing you are buying has. This is why its important to buy things we will actually use/need and go green/small business as much as we can 🙂

    1. Totally agree with you, The City Next Door. Where we spend our money matters and it’s great to support companies that will have a positive impact on the planet. Being conscious of our money habits will also have an impact on our financial future.

  9. I really missed out on Cyber Monday this year. I agree with you – nothing wrong with spending money as long as you manage your finance appropriately. Love all of these green products!! I’ve been avoiding Amazon as much as I can this year. Considering how my spending went down compared to prior years, I am happy! OMG!!! SAME WITH WHOLE FOODS!!! I used to LOVE this supermarket… Now… I don’t care for it :(. It kind of sucks but at least there is Trader Joes.

  10. Oh, I love the idea of making sure your purchases are green for this time of year! Too often we can get pulled into purchases that seem great, but aren’t green.

Personally, I bought nothing during Black Friday and Cyber Monday, I have everything I need so I didn’t snatch up sales just for the sake of sales, but thinking green is the way to go imo.

  11. Some great deals to be had. I love the focus on more ethical and sustainable options. I think sales can often focus on just buying for buying sake, so it is nice to shift focus away from consumerism. Hope you have a lovely holidays x

  12. This is great! I’m not much of a shopper myself, in fact I really hate shopping. It’s great that you can shop online but still support your values and small companies. Thanks for this great resource!

    1. I’ve definitely embraced online shopping for the things we need since the pandemic started, Clarissa. It is a lot easier, safer and quicker to get shopping done online. The best part is being able to support smaller companies, which I encourage everyone to do if they can (but only if you were planning to purchase something you need or want anyway).
