Keeping up with the daily writing challenge known as Blogtober may turn out to be a Halloween trick I’ve played on myself! I wasn’t prepared ahead of time with pre-written posts all ready to go. While surfing the internet for ideas, I came up with a fun Blogtober Tag Game to share with all of you.
There are 2 ways to play this game…

Inspiration for the Blogtober Tag Game
This game was inspired by Ellie, of Ellie’s Little World, who spilled her Halloween secrets in a Hallotober tag game. The Hallotober tag was started by Jordanne, the creative blogger behind Of A Glasgow Girl. Jordanne explains Hallotober here.
I want to thank both Ellie and Jordanne for the inspiration! Without reading their posts, I would not have thought to do a Blogtober Tag Game.
The Blogtober Tag Game Can Be Played 2 Ways
The First Way to Play the Game
The first way to play the Blogtober Tag Game is directed to the 13 bloggers I’ve tagged in this post. Each of these 13 bloggers were selected because I knew they were participating in Blogtober, so I suspected I could get them to spill their secrets, tricks, or treats related to Halloween.
However, if you’re going to play the game, you can include your favorite bloggers whether they are participating in Blogtober or not. Make this game work for you & make it fun! Baby Boomer Super Saver focuses on personal finance and how to catch-up retirement savings after a late start, so I’ve added some money questions to the mix!
Blogtober Tag Game Rules:
Thank the blogger who tagged you and link to their post.
Put the rules after an introduction, then answer the 13 questions.
Tag 13 more bloggers to participate in the game.
Use these same Halloween questions, or create new ones of your own.
Here are the 13 questions, with my answers for your enjoyment:
Halloween Favorites
1. What’s your favorite thing about October or Halloween? Walking around the neighborhood at dusk to see all the creative Halloween decorations gives me a thrill. Some people go all out! I can’t help wondering about their electric bill, though.
Cost of Halloween
2. How much money do you spend on Halloween? Not very much, probably less than $30. I usually pick up a few pumpkins to decorate our porch. In the past, we spent a little more money on candy and homemade costumes for Halloween parties.
3. What do you think the average person spends just on Halloween candy & does it match what you spend? I had to look this one up because I had no idea how much the average American spent on Halloween candy. For the nation, the amount seems huge, but individually it’s not so bad. (Tip – answer is near the end of this post). I spend much less than average!
4. Speaking of what the average person spends on candy, when you add in the cost of decorations, costumes, and greeting cards the total comes to around $86 per person. The National Retail Federation found that 25% of people said their holiday plans were influenced by Facebook, Pinterest, YouTube and Instagram. Does social media influence how much you decorate for Halloween, causing you to spend more? I’m not really influenced by social media in this way, as I am fairly low-key when it comes to decorating. Although, maybe I could improve if I spent more time on Pinterest & Instagram!
Costumes
5. Do you buy or create your own Halloween costumes, and what was your favorite costume so far? We usually always made our own homemade Halloween costumes. One year I dressed up as Hawkeye from M*A*S*H. I wore a set of hospital scrubs and used Vasoline and coffee grounds on my face to simulate the stubble of his unshaven face.
Tricks & Treats
6. Share a trick you have played on someone at Halloween? Hate to admit it, but as a teenager my friends and I threw eggs at a house. Oops!
7. Do you have a favorite Halloween treat? After carving pumpkins into Jack-O-Lanterns, I like to roast the pumpkin seeds with herbs and salt for a delicious snack.
Pumpkins
8. What is something you can do with a pumpkin once Halloween is over? We usually leave our carved pumpkins out on the porch until they rot, so I add them to the compost bin. Uncarved pumpkins have been cooked into pies, but I’d love to conduct a cool science experiment with kids. Each person takes turns putting rubber bands around the middle of the pumpkin until it explodes! (We would wear eye goggles).
9. Do you consider pumpkin a fruit or a vegetable? Technically, a pumpkin is a fruit and it is delicious when baked into cookies and pies. I love it that pumpkins are versatile enough to be used like a veggie in savory curries, soups and stews, too!
Food & Drink
10. What is the scariest food you’ve ever eaten? On my very first dinner date with my husband, I ordered and ate rattlesnake! I’d never tried it before, so I decided to show this guy how bold I was. It didn’t seem to scare him away! At one time, I was afraid to eat any wild mushrooms, until I learned how to properly identify and collect edible mushrooms.
11. Do you have a favorite bubbling Halloween drink? You can never go wrong offering me champagne. I also enjoy making and drinking effervescent kombucha. Learning to make herbal kombucha is easy. Since it’s fermented, kombucha is pretty bubbly!
Making Money
12. People usually spend money on Halloween, but have you ever made money related to this holiday? No, but this could be a fun hobby to make extra money for retirement! I’ve purchased Halloween decorations from craft fair sellers, and I know people make money creating costumes and painting faces. There are many opportunities!
Halloween Reading
13. Have you ever read Frankenstein by Mary Shelley, or another frightening book? I have not read Frankenstein, but I did read Interview with the Vampire by Anne Rice. I’ve also read The Twilight Saga, a series of vampire-themed fantasy novels by Stephenie Meyer. Recently, I’ve started reading post-apocalyptic novels. My favorite (and an award winning bestseller) is Station Eleven by Emily St. John Mandell. The writing is exceptional.
Thank You!

Spoiler Alert – Candy Trivia Answer
By the way, if you were wondering how much the average American spends on Halloween candy, in 2019 it was $2.6 billion dollars according to the National Retail Federation. That works out to about $25 per person. Maybe it would be better to make your own candy, to save a little money.
The Second Way to Play the Blogtober Tag Game
For my readers who are not participating in Blogtober, you can play a version of this game, too! Just answer any of the questions that haunt you the most, in the comments below.
I’d love to see reader responses to any of these questions. Please add your comments below!
Hmm. Is a pumpkin a fruit or a vegetable. My first thought is vegetable. But we bake it into a pie for dessert. That must make it a fruit. Since the seeds are on the inside, I think that makes it a fruit.
Yes, definitely a fruit. LOL
It’s great we can use pumpkin both ways! Thanks for your comments, Michelle!
I must say, all questions are very Interesting.
Thanks, Swarnali Das! Feel free to answer one here for fun!
The food, maybe the cake horror style been made before as another blogtober. Great post!
Halloween-themed food is so much fun. Thank you for your comments, Fransic verso!
I actually love reading blog posts like this! I also love getting involved with them too. Lovely read for this evening 🙂
P.a. Pumpkin is definitely a vegetable right? Haha
Ashleigh – http://www.ashleighsmoments.com
Thank you, Ashleigh! So glad you enjoyed the post. Technically, pumpkin is a fruit. It’s sure great in savory dishes, though!
My favourite thing about October is that it has two dates worth celebrating, my birthday and Halloween
Sweet! Happy Birthday, Unwanted Life!
Fun games. It was nice to learn more about you.
Thank you, Retirestyle Travel! Glad you enjoyed the post & thanks for your kind comment.
I love the homemade Octopus halloween costume. Very creative thinking there with the umbrella
Thanks, Claire! Appreciate your feedback!
I love how you incorporated finances into this! Although I may be a bit bias because I am a Financial Finatic. This was such a fun blog post and THANK YOU for telling me about it so I could join in on the fun! I had so much fun doing this! here’s mine! https://www.agapephilialifecoach.com/post/hello-beautiful-ghouls-goblins
So glad you’re playing along, Lisamarie! Love your follow-up post on your site, great job!
To me, a pumpkin has always been a pumpkin, but I would consider it a vegetable simply because it belongs to the squash family.
We feed our pumpkins to our chickens once we are done with them! 🙂
That is a great use of jack-o-lanterns after Halloween is over, Jaya. I would love to have chickens! I can just imagine the rich orange color of the yolks after the chickens enjoy eating the leftover pumpkins!
Thanks for the tag. Fun post.
You’re welcome, Weird & Liberated! Looking forward to reading more of your writing!
This is too much fun! Thanks for the tag…
I am going to drop an answer to one of the questions here because I love the discussions that tags like this trigger. I haven’t made money in the sense of bringing money into the house BUT we hold an annual fundraiser on Halloween night here.
I perform with a saxophone quartet. On Halloween night we decorate my front yard and driveway all up in a Nightmare Before Christmas theme, dress up ourselves as if we belong in Halloween Town, and play Halloween themed music live all night long. My husband and any volunteers that join us hand out candy and hot chocolate while collecting donations for our local food bank (money, non-perishable food items, hygiene items, etc.)
This is such a great idea, Britt! I love that you involve your family and community in holding a Halloween fundraiser, complete with live music! How spectacular!
This is such a fun tag! I hope you’re having a wonderful Halloween season! 🙂
Thanks, Melissa! Halloween is a fun time, although it’s going to look very different this year! Stay safe!
Fun game! I too like to bake pumpkin seeds for a tasty snack, and agree that pumpkin is great in baked goods. Pumpkin dark chocolate chip cookies are my favorite…. Your daughters costume was adorable by the way. Happy Halloween!
Thanks, Clarissa! All those pumpkin treats are so good! Happy Halloween to you, too! Thank you for the compliment on my daughter’s costume, she did a great job with it.
